HAITI (GaeaTimes.com)- Haiti was hit by a second earthquake on Wednesday, taking the count up to two in the last eight days. The readings on the Richter Scale showed that the latest earthquake had hit at a scale of 6.1. The epicenter of the earthquake was Hispaniola, about 59 kilometers away from the capital of the country, Port-au-Prince. This latest earthquake that hit the country caused an additional disruption in the country that is already reeling form the after effects of the previous earthquake, that had measured 7.0 in the Richter Scale.
Thankfully, however, the second earthquake in Haiti had not caused any further damage in the already devastated country. So far, there has not been any such reports that state the incurring of damage to either property or life in the country. Initially, the earthquake had read 6.1 on the Richter Scale, but later on, the United States Geographical Survey reported that the intensity of the earthquake had gone down to 5.9.
Since the earthquake had hit the island of Hispaniola in the wee hours of the morning, many of the residents were still asleep. However, the initial tremors ensured that they moved out of their homes as fast as possible. According to some of the reports provided by the witnesses, even those that were asleep woke up and moved out, fearing that this earthquake, too, would be a major one. According to the officials of the Geological Survey of the United States, the second earthquake that hit Haiti on Wednesday was not actually a second earthquake, but a huge aftershock of the one that had hit before.
