US rescuers save woman at collapsed university

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — American rescue workers have freed a woman trapped for four days under the rubble of a collapsed university building, a rare miracle in a city awash in death and misery.

The Associated Press witnessed the rescue of 29-year-old Saint-Helene Jean-Louis on Saturday evening, 97 hours after the quake struck.

She had been trapped between the second and third floors of a collapsed building at the Port-au-Prince university, surrounded by the bodies of at least eight people who died.

Another rescue operation was under way at the Montana Hotel, where emergency teams said they heard the voice of a woman speaking in French. The teams said they believe they have located two other people alive under the rubble.
