2 killed, 2 injured in Salt Lake TRAX accident

SALT LAKE CITY — Two people are dead and two are in critical condition after their car collided with a light-rail train.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Smith says the TRAX train hit the car at 7:10 p.m. Thursday at an intersection near 200 W. Central Ave. in South Salt Lake.

The train struck the driver’s side of the vehicle and pushed the car about 300 feet down the track.

Smith says police believe the driver tried to go around warning arms at the intersection, leading to the accident.

The dead and injured were in their late teens or early 20s but their identities were not immediately released.

None of the 60 to 80 passengers on the train was injured.

Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter says the accident was the first involving TRAX to result in multiple deaths.
