50 animals die in Russia circus fire

St. Petersburg, Dec 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) About 50 animals died in a fire that broke out in a travelling circus on the outskirts of St. Petersburg Monday, Russia’s emergency ministry said.

The fire did not affect the animal performers of the circus but about 50 other exotic animals put in an exhibition at a sideline show died, a spokesperson for the circus said.

A skunk, several ferrets, monkeys and rabbits were among the victims of the disaster. All of them belonged to private owners, she added.

No human casualty was reported. It took firefighters about two hours to put out the blaze.
