LUCKNOW - A first year student of a renowned management college in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district Wednesday committed suicide allegedly due to exam stress and fear of failure, police said.

Bhanu Pratap Singh, 23, enrolled in the MBA course of the School of Management Sciences (SMS), was found dead inside his room.

“Bhanu was found hanging from the ventilator of his room. It appears to be a case of suicide,” Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan told reporters in Varanasi, some 300 km from Lucknow.

“The victim’s batch mates have told us that he (Singh) was under stress owing to lack of his preparation for the upcoming semester exams and feared that he would fail in the examination,” he added.

Singh, son of an official of the State Bank of India (SBI), was a native of Ballia district.

The suicide was detected when the door of Bhanu’s room was broken open after he did not responded to phone calls made by his friend Vivek Dixit.
