LUCKNOW - A local Congress leader was critically injured when two motorcycle-borne assailants sprayed him with bullets in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh Thursday, police said.

Munnu Tyagi, block level president of the Congress unit, was ambushed in Dudhari village, some 450 km from Lucknow.

“He is being treated at a local hospital, and his condition is serious. He has received multiple bullet injuries in his hands and neck,” police inspector B.L. Shah told reporters in Saharanpur.

The gunmen fired at Tyagi while he was on his way to a nearby village to meet his supporters, he said.

Police, clueless about the assailants and their motive, are investigating.

Meanwhile, president of the Saharanpur unit of Congress, Meharban Alam, told reporters that party activists would carry out demonstrations across the district if the assailants were not arrested within the next 24 hours.
