LUCKNOW - At least four pilgrims, including two women, were killed and 12 others were injured when their vehicle overturned Tuesday in Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh. Five of the injured are in a critical condition, police said.

“Of the 12 injured, five have been transferred to a hospital in Allahabad as their condition has deteriorated,” police inspector Ghanshyam Pandey told reporters in Chitrakoot.

The accident took place in the Raipura area, some 300 km from Lucknow, where the truck carrying 30-35 pilgrims overturned, killing four people on the spot.

According to police, the persons were returning from Chitrakoot Dham, a pilgrimage centre in Chitrakoot.

“The truck was being driven rashly. Efforts are on to arrest the driver, who has run away,” Pandey added.
