LUCKNOW - A drunk government employee jumped to his death from the third floor of the Secretariat Annexe building in Hazratganj area here Tuesday, police said.

Anil Kumar, aged around 40 years, died on the spot. Police inspector K.N. Mishra said he was a Class IV employee. “We are investigating why he committed suicide,” Mishra told reporters.

His colleagues alleged that Kumar took the extreme step due to a delay in getting his dues cleared by officials in the secretariat.

Kumar’s death triggered protests by the secretariat employees, who took to the streets and demanded a compensation of Rs.25 lakh for his family.

A widower, Kumar was a native of Ballia district. He is survived by two sons, police said.

The Secretariat Annexe houses many important state government departments, including the chief minister’s office.
