KOLKATA - A possible train derailment was averted in West Bengal as a man was caught while damaging the track on Azimganj-Nalhati section of Eastern Railway’s Howrah division Tuesday.

Trackman Samil Seikh, who was working near a level crossing, saw a person removing pandrol clips — which fix the railway tracks with the concrete sleepers.

“With the help of the local people, he detained the person and later handed him over to Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel,” said an Eastern Railway spokesperson.

The accused has been identified as Brindaban Bagchi of Haripur in Murshidabad district.

Stealing of pandrol clips is common on the section, said a senior RPF officer.
