Six killed as jeep falls into Meghalaya gorge

SHILLONG - A five-year-old boy and five women were killed and 13 people critically injured Monday when the jeep they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge near here, police said.

The accident occurred at Ryndang Briew near Barapani lake, about 10 km from Shillong, when the driver of the speeding jeep lost control over the vehicle, Deputy Superintendent of Police S.W. Malai told IANS over phone.

According to the police, the jeep-load of people were on their way from Mawlai town to a nearby stream for washing clothes following a bereavement in the family.

The injured were taken to the Civil Hospital at Shillong.
