MUMBAI - Two people drowned while five others were rescued Sunday at a beach in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, police said here.

“The victims had gone to Kashid beach in Murud-Janjira town for a picnic. They must have got carried away due to strong currents in the sea,” a police officer said.

“Five of them were rescued by lifeguards but are reportedly critical,” he added.

Those who died have been identified as Nilesh Gaonkar, 21, and Prerna Khamkar, 22, both students of Sai Engineering College in Thane.

Raigad district is around 150 km from Mumbai.
