Earthquake in New Zealand Affects Christchurch Regions

CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND (GaeaTimes.com) — A few hours back, New Zealand was hit with a massive earthquake of magnitude 7. The epicenter has been reported to be lying 35 miles away from Christchurch area.

Although the earthquake has caused extensive damage, no reports of casualties and severe injuries have been received yet. The Christchurch area has a population of 386,000 people and hence officials are expecting a great number of casualties from that region.

The earthquake struck at around 4.35 local time. The aftershocks of Christchurch earthquake was measured around 5.7 in Richter scale. As a precautionary measure, the authorities have evacuated the international airport in Christchurch.
