RANCHI - In a theft discovered just a day ahead of Janmashtami, an idol of Lord Krishna was stolen from the Sri Sri Sideshawar Mahadeo temple in the Jharkhand capital, police said Wednesday.

The criminals also stole a crown and a gold chain from the temple, police said.

“When we opened the temple door at around 4 a.m. Wednesday we found that the idol of Sri Krishna, the chain and the crown were missing,” said a temple priest.

“A gang might be involved in the incident,” said Phoolan Nath, officer-in-charge of Lalpur police station of Ranchi.

Seven incidents of idol theft have been reported in the state in the past month. Police are yet to recover the 300-year-old idol of goddess Chhinmastika, which was stolen from Rajrappa temple last month.
