GANDHINAGAR - The Gujarat High Court Monday extended the interim relief against arrest granted to a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Kuldip Sharma, till Aug 25 in an alleged fake shootout case.

Justice R.H. Shukla extended the stay on the arrest while hearing Sharma’s petition seeking quashing of the police case registered against him in a 26-year-old fake shootout case.

Sharma, an additional director-general of police, has been accused by the Gujarat criminal investigation department (CID) of murder, kidnapping and criminal conspiracy in connection with the shootout that took place in Kutch district 26 years ago.

The IPS officer was then the district superintendent of police, Kutch district.

S.V. Raju, advocate for the petitioner, alleged that the four people killed in the shootout were spies, anti-national elements and smugglers.

The next hearing is Aug 25.
