Company files plan to restart Mich. oil pipeline

MARSHALL, Mich. — The company that operates a pipeline that spilled oil into a southern Michigan river has filed a proposed plan with federal regulators to eventually restart service.

The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration must authorize the restarting of the Enbridge Inc. pipeline that leaked into the Kalamazoo River near Marshall. Both the company and federal regulators say Tuesday it’s not known when the pipeline service might be restored.

An estimated 820,000 to more than 1 million gallons flowed from the ruptured pipeline.

Enbridge reported the leak July 26. Enbridge and the Environmental Protection Agency say the cleanup is progressing well.

The leak was on a pipeline that runs from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario.
