RANCHI - A Jharkhand court has given bail to Sudha Pathak, the mother of 23-year-old journalist Nirupama Pathak who was found dead in her home April 29, after police failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90 days from her arrest.

Sudha was arrested on May 3 after her New Delhi-based daughter Nirupama was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her home in Koderma’s Chitragupta Nagar.

“The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court of Justice N.K. Agrawal granted bail to Sudha Pathak Monday as police failed to file a chargesheet within 90 days of the arrest,” Arun Mishra, Sudha Pathak’s lawyer, told IANS over the phone from Koderma Tuesday.

Her New Delhi-based boy friend Priyabhanshu Ranjan had accused the family of the killing. Nirupama’s family, in turn, charged Ranjan with rape and abetment to suicide.

Investigators are yet to find out whether it is a case of homicide or suicide. The forensic report states the suicide note, found after Nirupama’s death, was written by her.

According to police, the three-member team which did the autopsy on the Nirupama, who was pregnant, did not mention the time of her death. Her viscera and foetus were not preserved. The report also made no mention of the injury marks on Nirupama’s body.
