Plastic Factory Explosion Shakes Nanjing on Wednesday

NANJING, CHINA (GaeaTimes.com) — Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, witnessed a large scale industrial explosion in a plastic factory on Wednesday morning. More than 5 people have been killed and over 300 are reported injured due to this accident. Buildings and vehicles within 100m of the factory suffered severe damage.

The blast was caused due to a gas leak in one of the pipelines of the abandoned factory. Local residents said they felt a tremor and heard a loud noise, and many fled from buildings thinking it was an earthquake. Rescue workers pulled out burnt corpses from the site while firefighters are trying to extinguish the blaze in the factory building.

Doctors at Nanjing’s Zhongda hospital told the AFP news agency that the hospitals across the city were treating the injured, most of whom had burns.
