Computer teacher held for dowry harassment

GREATER NOIDA - A computer teacher was arrested following a dowry harassment complaint filed by his wife and mother of two children in Uttar Pradesh’s Dadri town, police said Saturday.

Pinky Rani, 25, told police that her husband Sachin Sharma, 28, demanded a dowry of Rs.2 lakh, four years after their love marriage in Dadri in 2006. He was arrested July 12.

Since the two, originally from Dadri, belonged to different communities they shifted to Jaipur after the marriage fearing reprisal from their families.

But after four years of marriage, Sachin deserted her and their children when his dowry demands were not met, she told police.

“I had told him that since ours was a love marriage there was no question of dowry,” she

told police.

“When my husband did not return, I came back to Dadri with my children and complained to the police about the matter,” Pinky said. Police registered a case July 12.

Pinky and her brother Jai Prakash alleged police have not arrested members of Sachin’s family involved in dowry harassment. She has also sought police protection fearing an attack from her husband’s family.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Singh said: “It was a case of Jaipur but we still registered it as she is a woman. They wanted to file two complaints. We have registered it at one police station. They are naming all members of the boy’s family and want to get them arrested.”

“No one can be arrested simple because another person is naming him in the complaint. If a person is found guilty in investigations, certainly action would be taken against him,” he said.
