10 dead as boat capsizes in Uganda’s Lake Victoria

KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandan police say 10 people died after a boat they were traveling in capsized on the Ugandan side of Lake Victoria.

Noah Serunjogi confirmed the deaths Wednesday. Vincent Ssekamatte, a national police spokesman, says four survivors were pulled out of the water unconscious and were receiving treatment at a hospital. He says the boat was ferrying passengers and fish from an island in the lake and was to dock near the town of Entebbe, just south of the capital, Kampala.

Ssekamatte says strong winds may have caused the boat to capsize. It is not clear if there were more people on the boat in addition to the 14 known passengers.

Lake Victoria is the world’s second-largest body of fresh water. It borders Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
