WIESBADEN - Six people were killed and four others injured in a farmhouse fire in Limburg in western Germany, police said Tuesday.

The farmer, his wife and their three adult children died in the flames, a police spokesman said. They are all thought to have suffocated in their sleep.

Another man died of his injuries in hospital after escaping the burning building through the roof.

The grandparents and a seasonal labourer from Poland were among the injured.

The farmhouse burnt down completely, but firefighters could prevent the fire from spreading to stables and other buildings, fire chief Uwe Zimmermann said.

It was not yet clear what caused the fire, which broke out near the top of the building in the early hours of Tuesday.
