Man who helped Pakistani spy sent to police custody

CHANDIGARH - A local court here Tuesday sent Anand Kumar, a Delhi resident arrested for assisting a Pakistani spy, to two-day police custody.

According to police, Anand Kumar, 32, was arrested by a special team of the crime branch of Chandigarh police Monday from Haiderpur area in Delhi.

He is accused of helping Kashif Ali, a Pakistani spy, who was arrested here July 10.

“Kumar provided identity proofs of his younger brother Pawan Kumar to Ali to help him obtain a fake driving licence and identity cards. He also gave a guarantee for Ali in various nationalised banks to help him open accounts,” Inspector Amanjot Singh told IANS Tuesday.

“During interrogation, we would try to find out more details and ascertain their links,” he added.

Police sources said Anand Kumar was in touch with Ali since 2005 but he was not aware about his spying activities.

Ali was staying in Chandigarh for the last two-and-a-half years and he had duped many government departments and banks during his stay.

He had a driving licence, voter identity card, PAN card and had even applied for a passport, police said.

He is a resident of Faisalabad in Pakistan’s Punjab province. He was supplying vital defence information to the neighbouring country, police said.

Earlier, on the basis of his interrogation, police arrested three people who helped him procure a high school certificate and apply for the passport.
