RANCHI - Less than a week after the theft of an idol of goddess Chhinmastika, the idol of the Sun god was broken by unidentified men in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district, police said Wednesday.

According to police, the idol which was found broken Wednesday morning was placed in the Sun temple situated in Indrapuri colony in the district.

The temple is situated near a pond where thousands of people perform Chhath Puja in October.

“We have set up a team to probe the incident. We will soon arrest the culprits,” said a police officer.

Hazaribagh is some 100 km from Ranchi.

On July 2, a three-century-old idol of goddess Chhinmastika was stolen from Rajrappa temple in Ramgarh district, some 70 km from here.

The idol, heavily decked with precious stones, was found missing when the priests opened the temple early morning to perform prayers.

After the Rajrappa temple incident, Jharkhand Governor, M.O.H. Farook had ordered the police to step up security at all temples.
