AMBALA, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Heavy rains in the districts of Ambala and Kurukshetra in Haryana has led to flood-like conditions in the region. The rivers and canals in the region are overflowing and it is because of this that the rescue workers and government authorities have taken the decision to bar people from using the National Highway 1 which connects Ambala to Delhi.

As a result of closure of the National Highway 1, all communication has stopped between the neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The latest reports claim that Ambala has witnessed more than 500 mm rain over the past three days. However the weather condition has improved today with no rain in the morning. Not only roads, but also rail service was affected due to the flood situation in the state and the accumulation of rain water on the railway tracks, with the Shatabdi Express and the Kalka Mail running between Delhi and Kalka and crossing Chandigarh being cancelled yesterday evening. While the Kalka Mail had to stop its operation in Panipat, thus stranding the passengers midway, the Kalka Mail did not even start from Chandigarh.

However transport was not the only segment affected by the rains and flood in Ambala. Residents in the district had a tough time throughout yesterday battling with power cuts. Following the accumulation of three to four feet of water as a result of the heavy rains, there was also a shortage of power supply in the city of Ambala. With rains taking a break, the power situation in the city has also returned to its normal state.
