DHAKA - One person was killed and 33 were injured as police opened fire on agitating locals who were demanding a highway speed breaker in northern Bangladesh.

The police officer in charge of the area was suspended after Thursday’s incident on Dhaka-Mawa highway at Kuchiamora in Munshiganj district.

The locals demanded a speed breaker following the death of Mehedi Hasan, a class seven student, in a road accident Wednesday.

Moslem, 32, died in Thursday’s clash.

While the agitators accused the police of indiscriminate use of force, the police said mahny of the agitators were carrying “a variety of weapons”, The Daily Star reported.
