Miner dies at Massey operation in W.Va.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Another Massey Energy coal miner has died from injuries suffered at one of the troubled company’s West Virginia mines.
State Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater says the miner died Thursday morning after an accident at Massey’s Pocahontas Mine in Greenbrier County.
Jesse Lawder with the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration says the victim was an electrician who was run over about 8:30 a.m. by a piece of heavy equipment used to haul coal.
A Massey spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Twenty-nine men died in an April 5 explosion at Virginia-based Massey’s Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County. It was the nation’s worst coal mining disaster in 40 years.
