Concrete slab collapses at Milwaukee lakefront parking garage, killing 1, injuring 2 others

MILWAUKEE — Authorities say a concrete slab fell from a Milwaukee lakefront parking ramp, killing one person and injuring two others.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said the 30-foot slab collapsed Thursday afternoon, just as thousands of people were pouring into downtown Milwaukee to attend the kickoff of a nearby music festival.

It wasn’t immediately clear how far the slab fell. Firefighters had used a large blue tarp to cover the affected area, which extended about one story up on part of the facade.

Clarke withheld the victims’ names, genders and ages, pending notification of relatives.

The collapse was at an entrance to a parking garage a few blocks from Summerfest, which bills itself as the world’s largest music festival.
