Car bomb kills at least 5 in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD — Iraqi officials say at least five people have been killed and more than 40 wounded in a car bombing in northern Iraq.

Friday’s blast is the deadliest of a series of attacks that left at least 12 people dead nationwide, a grim reminder of the dangers facing Iraqis despite a sharp drop in violence over the past few years.

Police officials say the explosives-packed car was parked near the house of a Niazi Mohammed, a provincial council member, in Tuz Khormato.

The officials confirmed the casualty toll on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information.

Tuz Khormato is a mainly Shiite Turkomen town, 130 miles (210 kilometers) north of Baghdad.
