AHMEDABAD - A mock anti-terror drill caused considerable panic here Tuesday after staccato bursts of firing were heard from the Sardar Patel stadium, a popular venue for cricket matches, police said.

The fear was accentuated as police cordoned off the entire area as part of their drill during peak traffic hours. There was palpable tension and media offices were besieged with telephone calls for information about the incident.

Even official agencies went into alert before being told that it was a “mock drill” by the police to test their own preparedness, an official said.

Key branches of the city police and fire brigade took part in the mock drill that lasted nearly an hour.
