BP: Spilled-oil revenues to benefit wildlife

NEW ORLEANS — BP PLC says it will donate money from selling the oil recovered in the Gulf of Mexico spill to wildlife protection in the region.

The British oil giant said Tuesday that it can’t yet predict the amount of money that will go into its fund to create, restore, improve and protect wildlife habitat.

CEO Tony Hayward says in a statement that “we believe these funds will have a significant positive impact on the environment.”

Oil from the spill that began in April has washed up on shores from Louisiana to Florida, killing birds and other wildlife in numbers so far unknown.

The Coast Guard has said the cleanup could ultimately take years.
