BHOPAL, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The Bhopal gas tragedy verdict has created sensation in the political circles in India and the media is calling it a travesty of justice. However, the United States has turned down any possibility of pursuing the case once more. While Robert Blake the US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia said that it was a great industrial disaster in human history he also reiterated that the recent verdict will pacify the kins of the victims. In India things are very different as the relatives of the victims feel that the moderate punishment given to the guilty are quite unfair and the verdict undermines the severity of the disaster.

It is not clear if the extradition of Warren Anderson, the former chairman of Union Carbide parent group would be possible or not. The verdict which came out on Monday sentenced 8 people to 2 years imprisonment. The Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984 took the lives of estimated 20000 people. What has hurt the kins of the deceased and crippled is the fact that the guilty 8 people got bail on the day the verdict came out. The human right groups have also cried foul over the issue. Among the convicted people the name of Keshub Mahindra, the former Union Carbide of India Chairman and Mahindra & Mahindra chief deserves mention. The court remained tight lipped on Warren Anderson who was announced an absconder.

The verdict on Bhopal gas tragedy has given BJP the option to caution the ruling UPA government to not push the Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill. Ravi Shankar Prasad, the BJP national general secretary called the court verdict sheer unfortunate for the victims.
