Bhopal Gas Tragedy Verdict Convicts Kesub Mahindra

BHOPAL, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Bhopal Gas Tragedy which happens to be one of the serious industrial disasters of all time witnessed it’s verdict being announced today. Reportedly, the local court dealing with the Bhopal Gas Tragedy case convicted ex-chairman of Union Carbide India Kesub Mahindra along with seven other people.

The case was presided over by Chief judicial magistrate Mohan P. Tiwari who went ahead to give his verdict which finally convicted 85-year-old Kesub Mahindra who happens to be one of the main accused in the case. The same verdict was announced for seven other people who were accused of similar charges. Kesub Mahindra was convicted and held guilty under Section 304-A which makes the incident an act of “death by negligence” and 304-II which makes Bhopal Gas Tragedy a “culpable homicide not amounting to murder”. Following that were Section 336, 337 and 338 which makes Bhopal Gas Tragedy an incident of “gross negligence”.

Although Kesub Mahindra was convicted, the other chief accused in the case, chairman of Union Carbide Corporation, Warren Anderson was declared an “Absconder” as he failed to attend the trail. Apart from Kesub Mahindra, the other seven people who were convicted and held guilty for the Bhopal Gas Tragedy were Vijay Gokhle (Ex managing director of Union Carbide Plant India), SP Choudhary (Ex production manager), Kishore Kamdar, (Ex Vice-President), KV Shetty (Ex Plant Superintendent), JN Mukund (Ex Works Manager) along with SI Quershi (Ex Production Assistant).

After the Bhopal Gas Tragedy verdict was out, Rachna Dhingra who happens to be a prominent Bhopal rights activist told the media that even if the accused of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy are convicted they shall only face a prison of two years and not more than that which he feels is not the right punishment for such a serious issue.
