PORT BLAIR, INDIA(GaeaTimes.com)- Andaman Islands witnessed an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on Tuesday which have led the seismologists apprehend an impending Tsunami. Reportedly, the Andaman earthquake dropped in sharp at a depth of 80 miles (127 kilometres). The USGS (US Geological Survey) told the media that the Andaman earthquake had an epicenter of 120 kilometers that covered a long stretch in Port Blair on Andaman Islands encircling the Bay of Bengal.
Following the earthquake, Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center declared that owing to the Andaman earthquake reaching high magnitude, there might be a minor possibility of a Tsunami to hit very soon. Myanmar and Indonesia are also likely to be affected by the impending Tsunami Myanmar and Indonesia are located at the north and south of Andaman Islands.
The experts on the matter said that Delhi which happens to be located at a distance of 2,500 kilometers northwest of Andaman Islands has a high chance to experience the Tsunami. Recalling the year of 2004 when the Asian Tsunami took a heavy toll upon the Andaman islands and in Sumatra, the officials of the Tsunami warning center said that all people should exercise extreme caution and stay alert. The 2004 Tsunami was also triggered by a similar earthquake. The seismologists are of the opinion that the Andaman trench happens to be a weak plate and thus it frequently triggers earthquakes which in turn takes the shape of a Tsunami causing heavy damage. Talking about the recent earthquake, the officials of the Tsunami warning center said that although there is a chance of a Tsunami, it might not be as violent as the previous one.
