NEW DELHI - Coming to the rescue of a Border Security Force (BSF) trooper, the Delhi High Court Wednesday granted bail to him for shooting a woman smuggler on the Bangladesh border in self defence.

Justice Gita Mittal granted bail to Rajesh Kumar on furnishing a bail bond of Rs.10,000. His counsel Rekha Palli argued that Kumar acted in self defence and he never intended to shoot the woman.

“The women were smugglers and were crossing the border when Kumar was on duty. When he tried to stop them, they pelted stones on him. He fired from his gun and a bullet hit one woman,” she argued.

Kumar, who was posted on the West Bengal border in 2002 when the incident took place, was earlier sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and dismissed from service. He has challenged the sacking.
