Guatemala Sinkhole: Guatemala Crater Draws Attention

San Francisco (GaeaTimes.com) Guatemala Government has released a picture of a Sinkhole or Crater that appeared at the Guatemala City after it was hit by tropical storm Agatha. From the picture it looks like a very huge hole with no end. A sinkhole is also known as a sink, swallow hole, shake hole, swallet, cenote or doline. The Sinkhole is located at the Guatemala City. It is reported that a security guard has lost his life when he fell into the sinkhole. Reportedly, the sinkhole swallowed a three storied building when the crater opened up. However, the two incidents are not confirmed yet. According to official information, there are no casualties as a result of this sudden appearance of this sinkhole.
A sinkhole is defined as a natural depression of hole in the earth’s surface. It is generally caused by the removal of soil or bedrock or both. There may be different forms of Sinkholes soil lined bowls or bedrock edged chasms. Formation of Sinkholes may occur suddenly or gradually as water washes away the soil or bedrock beneath the earth’s surface. In this case the sinkhole appeared suddenly. The diameter and depth of the sinkholes may vary from less than a meter to several hundred meters. This Guatemala Sinkhole, however, appears to be very deep. Different types of sinkholes are found around the world.
More than 100 people lost their lives in the intense weather after the Tropical Storm Agatha hit Guatemala. 100,000 people are evacuated from their homes after the storm as mudslide wracked the country, burying victims, closing roads and collapsing bridges.
