Train derailment in China leaves at least 10 dead
BEIJING — Chinese state television reports that a passenger train hit by landslides has derailed in eastern China, killing at least 10 people
The train, bound for the tourist destination of Guilin, derailed around 2 a.m. Sunday in a mountainous area near Fuzhou city in eastern Jiangxi provinc.
China Central Television reports that firefighters deployed to the scene found 10 bodies and pulled out 53 others who were trapped inside the train carriages. The official Xinhua News Agency said rescuers evacuated another 280 people by 9 a.m.
Xinhua said more than 150 firefighters and rescue officials were sent to the scene of the accident. Officials warn the death toll could rise.
