CHANDIGARH - A youth has been arrested after two police officials were assaulted by a group of men in the Mauli Jagran area of Chandigarh. The police are looking for three other attackers, an official said Tuesday.

Chandigarh police sub-inspector Sikander Singh, 50, and constable Sandeep Kumar, 22, were admitted to the Government Multi-specialty Hospital in Sector 16 with injuries after a group of youths attacked them in the busy market of Mauli Jagran late Monday night.

“Kumar has sustained serious injury on the nose and he has to undergo surgery. Singh’s condition is stable and he is recuperating well,” Gurmukh Singh, in-charge of Mauli Jagran police post, told IANS here.

A police team, led by the sub-inspector, Monday night went to the market after receiving information that some youths were harassing a girl and had tried to snatch her purse.

However, after reaching the spot, the police team was attacked by a group of youths armed with swords, iron-rods and sticks.

Both police officials were injured in the assault while other officials fled in the police Gypsy to save their lives.

Onlookers had to intervene to save the two cops from the youths.

However, police denied that the policemen failed to catch the snatchers and instead got a beating from them.

“We got information regarding a scuffle between two groups of youths over an issue of teasing a girl. Police immediately reached there and while stopping them a rod hit Kumar’s face. We were well-equipped to handle them and there is no case of anybody beating our officials,” Gurmukh Singh said.

Police registered a case against four youths living in the same locality and arrested one of them.

Gurmukh Singh said police have also identified all the other attackers and were raiding various places to nab them.
