BEIJING - Two women were killed and seven children injured in China Monday after they were attacked by a man with a knife and an axe, an official said.

The attacker, Song Lirong, a native of Songjiapo Village in northwest China’s Shaanxi province, had quarrelled with his wife, prompting her to leave for her parents’ home, said Xue Yawei, an officer of the county government.

Blaming his neighbours for instigated the quarrel, Song, 35, took up a kitchen knife and an axe and went to six neighbouring homes, killing two women, aged 59 and 39, and injuring seven children, including two 18-month-old boys, Xue was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Police are searching for Song, who disappeared after the crime, said Xue.
