GANDHINAGAR - Ketan Desai, president of the Medical Council of India (MCI) who was arrested last month on corruption charges, has been suspended by the Gujarat government as professor of urology at the B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, officials said Sunday.

Desai, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) April 22, had sent in his resignation letter dated April 28 to the college by registered post.

On the delay in suspending him, Rajesh Kishore, principal secretary (health), said the government has a system in place by which it acts in all matters whether it pertains to resignation or any other official action.

Desai has been accused of accepting a bribe of Rs.2 crore for granting recognition to a private medical college in Punjab.
