Pilot dies, 1 injured in SC Guard helicopter crash

EASTOVER, S.C. — A pilot has died and a crewman has been injured in the crash of an attack helicopter at a South Carolina National Guard base.

Adjutant General Stanhope Spears said in a news release Monday the AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed Sunday afternoon during a training exercise at McEntire Joint Air National Guard Base east of Columbia.

First Lt. Jonathan Shively Jr. of Jamestown was killed. Chief Warrant Officer Roger Carpenter of Duncan was taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition.

Officials have not released details about the crash. Spears says the incident is under investigation.

Apaches are anti-tank and ground support helicopters that carry a crew of two.
