Chandigarh police arrest three, seize weapons

CHANDIGARH - Chandigarh police here Sunday claimed to have busted a gang of criminals with the arrest three people, two of whom had criminal records. Various arms were recovered from their possession.

According to police, acting on a tip-off they arrested three men, who were travelling in a white Bolero jeep bearing a fake registration number, from Sector 36.

“They were roaming in the city with the intention of committing some heinous crime. We have recovered one automatic pistol, two locally made pistols and several live cartridges from their possession,” said a police officer.

He added: “They had illegally procured these weapons from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and had planned some major crimes in Chandigarh and its neighbouring areas. They were staying in Sector 36 in a rented accommodation for the last one month.”

The accused were identified as Bhupinder Singh, resident of Mohali, Dhrampal alias Prince from Chandigarh, and Manpreet Singh who is resident of Mansa town in Punjab.

According to police sources, “Bhupinder Singh has a long criminal history, having been involved in 15 criminal cases like murder, attempt to murder, arms act and rioting. He is also declared as a proclaimed offender in some of the cases and is evading arrest.”

“Manpreet Singh also has pending cases of murder and arms act registered against him in Chandigarh and Punjab. Their interrogation is on and police will try to ascertain their links with other criminals of the region,” he added.
