LUCKNOW - At least five people were killed and eight injured early Tuesday when a speeding bus rammed into the tempo carrying them in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, police said.

The accident took place in Khatauli area, about 350 km from here, where the bus of the state-owned Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) ploughed into the tempo carrying workers of a sugar mill.

“The collision was an intense one. Five people were killed on the spot. Eight were injured. All the injured are being treated at a hospital, where the condition of four is stated to be critical,” police inspector Satpal Singh told reporters in Muzaffarnagar.

“Most of those inside the tempo were residents of Ratnapuri town in Muzaffarnagar. They were returning to their native place from a sugar mill of the district,” he said.

The bus driver, who escaped from the accident site, was later arrested, Singh said.
