Suicide bomber kills 2 police in Russian province
MAKHACHKALA, Russia — Police in Russia’s southern region of Dagestan say a suicide bombing has killed two officers and wounded at least seven other people.
Dagestan is one of three republics in Russia’s North Caucasus region with an entrenched militant separatist movement and suffers regularly from such violence.
Vyacheslav Gasanov, a spokesman with Dagestan’s Interior Ministry branch, told The Associated Press that Thursday’s attack involved a suicide bomber detonating explosives in a car after stopping at a traffic police checkpoint.
Dagestan was named by federal investigators as the source of the suicide bombings that tore through the Moscow subway in March, killing 40 people and wounding dozens. Dagestan neighbors Chechnya, the site of two bloody wars in the last 15 years.
