LUCKNOW - Two teenaged friends have been arrested for allegedly setting ablaze and killing a minor girl after they failed to rape her in Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur district, police said Friday.

“The two boys, residents of Chowki village, set a 16-year-old girl of the same village on fire Wednesday after an abortive rape attempt,” inspector Javed Siddiqui told IANS over phone.

The victim, who was admitted to a hospital with 80 per cent burn injuries, died Thursday.

The 17-year-olds were arrested Thursday.

“The two teenaged friends have confessed to their crime. They have admitted that when the girl raised an alarm, they doused her with kerosene and set her afire before leaving the place,” Siddiqui said.

Lalitpur district is some 300-km from state capital Lucknow.
