Obama declares major disaster in Conn. from floods
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster following floods in southwestern and southeastern Connecticut last month.
Obama made the declaration Friday and ordered federal aid to help with costs associated with the flooding beginning March 12 and continuing.
The counties of Fairfield, Middlesex and New London are eligible for federal assistance.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell had asked for the declaration after the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security assessed losses and expenses in Fairfield and New London counties.
An initial survey found public sector costs in the two counties were at least $11 million because of the storms of March 12-14 and March 29-30.
FEMA says more disaster declarations could follow.
