LUCKNOW - A man was lynched for attempting to burgle a businessman’s house in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district, police said Wednesday.

The man, in his early 30s, was caught Tuesday night by the locals of Ganeshpuri colony in Meerut, some 350 km from Lucknow, while he was attempting to burgle the house.

“The locals assaulted the thief with bricks and bamboo sticks following which he died on the spot,” police inspector Pramod Sharma told reporters in Meerut.

“We have registered a case against 10 unidentified men for killing Kumar,” said Sharma.

According to police, the alleged thief has been identified as Ravi Kumar, a native of Muzaffarnagar district. At least six theft cases were pending against him.

Since February, this is the third lynching incident reported in Uttar Pardesh. The other two incidents took place in Moradabad on Feb 19 and April 17.
