LUCKNOW - An independent legislator, who was wanted by police in connection with the murder of a contractor, surrendered Tuesday before an Uttar Pradesh court, police said.

Yashpal Rawat, who represents the Sehjanwa constituency in Gorakhpur district, some 300 km from Lucknow, was later remanded to 14-day judicial custody by the chief judicial magistrate’s court there, they added.

“The MLA surrendered in the court along with two of his aides, who were booked for killing a contractor last month,” said a police official.

On March 20, Rawat along with his two aides had allegedly shot dead a local contractor Vijay Rawat over a land dispute. Since then the three were absconding.
