ICELAND (GaeaTimes.com)- In a recent development, the flying ash and smoke from a volcano in Iceland has resulted in air traffic across the Europe coming to an abrupt halt. The volcanic eruptions caused several hundred flights in Nordic nations, Ireland and The UK to get canceled. Even the UK bound flights from countries like India were grounded resulting in severe inconvenience for the customers. The international travelers got stranded in several UK airports including Gatwick and Heathrow. The Scottish airports at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen have also been forced to cancel several of their flights.
The UK National Air Traffic Controllers are of the opinion that flying planes amidst such eruptions can prove to be fatal as the debris can get into the aircraft engines and also because the volcano’s smoke brings down the visibility to a large extent. It is not yet known when Heathrow and other UK airports can resume their normal operations. The Heathrow website has a message that warns the customers about the dangers of flying amidst such situation. The holidaymakers have been the worst affected by this unexpected development. A number of tour operators and airports have advised the customers to keep checking their websites for updates on the situation and also for a possible timing for resuming of the operations.
The Eyjafjallajokull volcano is still sending massive amount of smoke cloud in the sky and this has brought the flight service to a halt. This is a powerful eruption as the scientists believe. The smoke cannot be seen from the ground since it is flowing three miles above.
