Over 420 died in Delhi fire accidents last year

NEW DELHI - More than 420 people died and nearly 2,600 were injured in fire related incidents in the national capital in the last one year, officials said Tuesday.

According to the data released by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), 423 deaths were reported in the national capital due to fire while 2,598 people were injured in fire related accidents during April 2009 and March 2010.

In April 2008-March 2009, 380 deaths were reported and 2,225 persons were injured in fire cases.

A total of 21,314 calls were received at the fire control room during the same period as compared to 16,452 calls in 2008-09.

“Incidents of fire and deaths are increasing in the city year after year,” DFS Director R.C. Sharma told reporters here.

He said: 842 new posts in various ranks have been sanctioned by the government. A total of 1,242 vacancies of fire operators are being filled presently.

Till April 8, DFS has recommended the snapping of water and power connection of 714 high-rise buildings in Delhi, Sharma informed media persons.
