5 killed in northern Iraq attacks
BAGHDAD — Iraqi authorities say five people including a child have been killed in a pair of attacks near the northern city of Mosul.
A police officer said two policemen and one soldier were killed when a bomb exploded next to their joint patrol Saturday morning about 40 miles (60 kilometers) south of Mosul. A doctor confirmed the deaths.
Another police officer says a second roadside bomb targeting an Iraqi army patrol went off around noon, killing a soldier and a child. The attack came in an area about 16 miles (25 kilometers) south of Mosul.
The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss details with the press.
Violence has plummeted since its height in 2006 and 2007 but attacks continue, especially in the north.
