NEW DELHI - A businessman’s son was arrested for running his BMW car over a 62-year-old man in the national capital early Thursday, police said.
Raman Singhla, 27, mowed down Om Dutt Chauhan, a resident of east Delhi, with his car at 6.30 a.m. near Akshardham temple.
“Two others were also in the car. They were taken into custody but were later released,” a police official said. The accused is the son of Karkardooma-based businessman Baburam Singhla.
According to locals, the police delayed in taking the old man to the hospital, resulting in his death. A crowd blocked traffic for over two hours protesting laxity in the police action.
A police official, however, denied the allegation.
“The victim was taking a morning walk near the Akshardham Chowk around 6.30 a.m. The car, which was trying to overtake a motorcycle, ran over him. We rushed to the spot and immediately took the victim to the hospital.”
Last month two people were killed and two others were injured when a Tata Safari car ran over a group of labourers in south Delhi.
